Dacheng Suocheng

Dacheng Suocheng is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Dacheng Suocheng is located in Suocheng Town, Raoping County, and was initially constructed in the 27th year of the Hongwu reign during the Ming Dynasty (1394). The fortress stood “two zhang and seven chi tall, surrounded by 643 zhang, with a moat extending 53 zhang beyond the wall. It had gate towers on all four sides and turrets at each of the four corners,” functioning as a Qianhu Suo (a military command post), and served as a key military site along the coastal regions of Fujian and Guangdong during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In later years, most inhabitants earned their livelihood through salt drying. The layout of the fortress is square-shaped. Today, the east, west, and north gates remain largely intact, while the south gate has been demolished. The city walls on the east and north sides are still preserved, but those on the west and south are partially damaged. The town retains the basic structure of three streets and six lanes, with remnants of old government offices, temples, ancestral halls, and performance stages scattered throughout. It is the only remaining ancient military fortress of its kind in the Chaoshan region.

In July 2002, it was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.

Suocheng Town: Located at the border between Fujian and Guangdong, Suocheng Town is one of the frontier towns along the eastern Guangdong coast. With coordinates at 117°2′ east longitude and 23°12′ north latitude, it borders Dacheng Town to the east, Huanggang Town (the county seat) to the west, Zhelin Town to the south, and faces the vast South China Sea, with a distant view of Nan’ao Island.
