Yangdong Tile Kiln

The Yangdong Tile Kiln is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Yangdong Tile Kiln is situated on the hillside in front of Yangdong Village, Lianrao Town, Raoping County. It was established in 1966 and commenced production that same year. There are four kilns in total, all with a circular layout. The kiln structures are made from brick strips and consist of a main kiln and storage facilities, together forming a full production workflow. The site covers around 1,315 square meters. The kiln mainly manufactured tiles and brick strips for residential buildings, using traditional techniques and craftsmanship throughout the production process. At its peak, 80 workers were employed daily, producing an average of five kiln loads per day — each kiln yielding 160,000 tiles, 100,000 tile worms, 1.15 million tile collars, and 5,000 brick strips. Its production scale was the largest within Raoping County.

With the deepening of reform and opening-up, modern building materials gradually replaced traditional ones, leading to the kiln’s closure in 2012. Nevertheless, the site has been preserved intact, with its grounds, procedures, and production processes all still in place. It is currently the largest and most well-preserved tile kiln in Raoping County, embodying the culture of an era and holding significant cultural heritage value.

In September 2013, it was designated as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. In 2015, it was further listed as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
