Ancient Ming and Qing Dynasty Fortified Village in Raoping

The ancient Ming and Qing Dynasty Fortified Village is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

The ancient fortified village from the Ming and Qing dynasties is located in Wuxi Village, Zhangxi Town, and the entire structure was built with rammed yellow earth. The building has a total floor area of 2,348 square meters, consisting of 54 rooms and 3 wells. It features a two-courtyard, two-story layout, with the ground floor used for living and the second floor for storage. The inner building, "Zilai Tower," was built during the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, while the outer building, "Gongci," was constructed during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty—60 years apart and spanning both the Ming and Qing dynasties—hence the name "Ming and Qing Ancient Fortified Village." The entire complex is well-equipped with defensive features. Due to the different construction periods and hierarchical roles of the inner and outer buildings, the inner structure is higher than the outer one, a rare feature among the earthen buildings of Chaoshan. It represents a perfect blend of Ming and Qing architectural art with the folk culture of Chaoshan earthen buildings, making it a treasured gem of ancient architecture. It is now a provincial-level cultural heritage site.
