Ershan Chaoyuan Building

Ershan Chaoyuan Building is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Guangdong Province.

Ershan Chaoyuan Building is located in Ershan Village, Shangrao Town, Raoping County, and was first built in the 15th year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1889). Facing south and situated to the north, the structure is circular in shape, with a diameter of 99 meters and an overall area of approximately 8,431 square meters. It features two concentric enclosures. The inner enclosure has single-story rooms at the front and three-story buildings at the rear, divided into 36 units in total, with an inner courtyard in the center, one well, while the outer enclosure has single-story rooms at the front and two-story buildings at the rear, divided into 44 units, with a pond in front of the gate. The building has stone foundations, walls made of rammed yellow earth, plastered inner walls, gray tiled roofs, and overhanging eaves. Its gate tower and lintel are built from stone, with the lintel inscribed in intaglio with the characters “潮源楼” (Chaoyuan Building). This massive and spectacular building, with a long history and having endured the trials of time, remains well-preserved to this day. It is a typical representative of earthen building architecture from the late Qing Dynasty and holds significant historical and artistic value. In April 2011, it was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Raoping County. In 2012, it was listed as part of the seventh batch of provincial cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Guangdong Province.
