Tomb of Xu Zuigong

The Tomb of Xu Zuigong is a cultural heritage site protected by Raoping County.

The Tomb of Xu Zuigong is located on the east side of Longjing Avenue behind Shanglin Village, Huanggang Town, Raoping County. Xu Laizu (courtesy name Zuigong) was the founding ancestor of the Xu clan in Shanxia Village, the tenth-generation descendant of Xu Shen of Chaozhou (one of the Eight Eminent Scholars of Chaozhou), and the sixth-generation descendant of Xu Jue, the imperial son-in-law ancestor of Chaozhou. Xu Laizu passed the imperial examination (Jinshi) in the Yimao year (1235) during the reign of Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, served as the magistrate of Wucheng County (present-day Liao County, Shandong Province), and was later promoted to Prefect of Dongchang Prefecture. The tomb was built during the Song Dynasty and renovated in the 31st year of the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty (1552). It faces northwest and is situated southeast, with a total width of 20 meters and a depth of 28 meters, covering an area of approximately 560 square meters. The rear part of the tomb consists of a burial mound, in front of which stands a stone stele erected during the Ming Dynasty renovation, inscribed with “Tomb of Xu Zuigong of the Song Dynasty,” and signed “Erected in the third year of the Jiajing era of the Great Ming (1552), in the spring, by the tenth-generation descendants including Ci.” The stele is 1.6 meters high and 0.7 meters wide. On both sides of the stele, the tomb surface is constructed with lime plaster in two levels, with a sacrificial platform, tomb forecourt, and moon-shaped pond in front. The site holds certain significance for the study of local funeral customs and the history of the Xu family. In April 2011, it was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site by the People's Government of Raoping County.
