Former Residence of Zhang Jingsheng

The former residence of Zhang Jingsheng is a cultural relic protection unit of Raoping County.

The former residence of Zhang Jingsheng is located to the west of Darongpu Village, Fubin Town, Raoping County. It was originally built in 1933, destroyed after the land reform in 1952, and rebuilt in 2004 with funding from the county government. Facing south and situated to the north, the building covers an area of 120 square meters and is constructed with earth and wood. The residence includes a reception hall, kitchen, bedroom, and has restored the original layout featuring a small pavilion, lotus pond, and a well, among others. It served as the main place where Zhang Jingsheng lived, engaged in social activities, and wrote and translated works, holding certain historical value. In April 2011, it was designated as a county-level cultural relic protection unit by the Raoping County People's Government.

Zhang Jingsheng (1888–1970), a native of Darongpu Village, Fubin, Raoping County, was the first Ph.D. from the Chaoshan region and a prominent figure in China’s intellectual and cultural circles during the 1920s and 1930s. He was a renowned philosopher, aesthete, sexologist, litterateur, and educator. In his early years, he joined the Tongmenghui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) and was appointed by Sun Yat-sen as the chief secretary of the Southern Peace Delegation, participating in the North-South peace negotiations that led to the end of the Qing Dynasty. He was among the first group of Chinese students to earn a doctoral degree abroad (in France), and served as a professor in the Philosophy Department at Peking University from 1921 to 1927. He was a pioneer in advocating for family planning and initiated the great debate on love, making him one of the founders of sexual education and sexology research in China. Throughout his life, he authored and translated numerous works and was selected as a Century Guangdong Scholar.
