Hou Mountain Cliff Carvings

The Hou Mountain Cliff Carvings are located on Hou Mountain in Furun Village, Haishan Town, Raoping County. Locally known as the "Songpan Cliff Carvings," they were carved during the Qing Dynasty. Songpan consists of massive rocks surrounded by banyan trees, forming a natural scenic landscape. There are four stone inscriptions on the rocks—three facing east and one facing north—covering a total area of about 8 square meters. They include “The Elegance of Haishan,” written in semi-cursive script horizontally, with characters measuring 35×35 cm; “The Grandeur of Songpan – A Rest Here Makes One Forget the Mundane, Climbing Here Lets One Question the Heavens,” written in semi-cursive script with a mix of horizontal and vertical strokes, in smaller font, signed “Inscribed by Lin Hongdu of Haishan Mountain”; “A Marvelous View of Mountains and Seas,” written in semi-cursive script horizontally, with characters measuring 56×6 cm; and “Chong Er (meaning ‘wind and moon’),” written in regular script horizontally, with characters measuring 65×65 cm, signed “Inscribed by Shen Wenyao of Kuaiji.” The carvings are relatively concentrated, have a long history, and hold certain historical and artistic value. In April 2011, they were designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit by the People’s Government of Raoping County.
