Maozhi Quande School

Quande School in Maozhi is a cultural relic protection unit of Raoping County.

Quande School, originally named Longgang Study Hall and commonly known as Tangchen Study Room, is located in the Maozhi community of Shangrao Town in the northern part of Raoping County. It consists of one classroom, one room, one courtyard, and covers an area of 300 square meters. On October 5, 1927, Comrade Zhu De led the Nanchang Uprising troops to Maozhi in Shangrao, setting up their headquarters at Quande School, where they held an important military strategy meeting. The former site of Quande School is now a Guangdong Provincial Party History Education Base and a Chaozhou Municipal Patriotic Education Base, serving as an important venue for patriotism and revolutionary tradition education.

Historical Evolution

In the early years of the Republic of China, to align with the trend of establishing new-style schools, "Longgang Study Hall" was renamed "Quande School." The name is derived from Zhuangzi·Tian Di: “The praise or criticism of the world brings neither benefit nor harm; such a person may be called one of complete virtue,” symbolizing moral perfection. According to recollections of teachers from that time, the four characters “Quande School” on the current gatehouse were written by Zhan Detian. After the founding of the People’s Republic, Quande School was once used as a home for martyrs’ families and the elderly in Shangrao Commune.

It has written a glorious page in the revolutionary history of Raoping County and even in the history of the Chinese revolution. On January 23, 1980, Zhu Min, daughter of Comrade Zhu De, Zhao Rong, then head of the Logistics Department of the Beijing Military Region and former secretary of the Educational Corps of the Ninth Army of the Nanchang Uprising troops, visited Quande School in Maozhi, Shangrao, accompanied by Li Zhang, deputy head of the Cultural Department of the Political Department of the Guangzhou Military Region, and Yan Fu, the then Party Secretary of Raoping County. As an important revolutionary site, on July 10, 1981, the People’s Government of Raoping County listed it as one of the first batch of county-level key cultural relic protection units for preservation.

The former site of Quande School is now a Guangdong Provincial Party History Education Base and a Chaozhou Municipal Patriotic Education Base, serving as an important venue for patriotism and revolutionary tradition education.
