Emerald Island is located in the southern section of the Golden Coast in Changli County, Hebei Province—one of China’s eight most beautiful coastlines—and is known as the “kiss mark where desert meets sea.” It is surrounded on three sides—east, north, and west—by the Bohai Sea and Qilihai Lagoon, forming a peninsula of alternating yellow fine sand and green vegetation. The island features rolling sand dunes that rise and fall, alternating between steep and gentle slopes, with smooth lines and graceful shapes. Its two main peaks in the north and south reach 44 meters in height, covering an area of seven square kilometers. From a high vantage point, the undulating sand dunes lie beneath the blue sea, surrounded by lush greenery, creating a mesmerizing view akin to an emerald embedded in gold—hence the name “Emerald Island.” This is a paradise for birds, home to nearly one-third of all bird species found in China, including 68 species under national protection. It is also one of the primary breeding grounds for the globally rare black-tailed gull. The lancelet, hailed as a “living fossil” by animal taxonomists, has an astonishing density of 1,035 individuals per square meter at depths of around 15 meters in the shallow sea, making it one of the highest concentrations in the country.

Emerald Island combines a variety of unique landscapes, including ocean-desert scenery, desert oasis vistas, ancient surviving species, and endangered rare birds. On September 30, 1990, the State Council approved the Golden Coast, where Emerald Island is located, as a national marine nature reserve.

The beach at Emerald Island boasts first-class seawater—fine sand, gentle slopes, clear water, and calm tides—offering the natural advantages of a top-tier coastal bathing spot. Recreational activities include sightseeing, sandboarding, grassboarding, swimming, beach soccer and volleyball, camping, bonfire parties, camel trekking expeditions, adventure training, speedboats, jet skis, and go-karts. Emerald Island is the perfect destination for eco-tourism and leisure, as well as an excellent venue for adventure training programs and summer camps for students.

Currently, the Hebei Provincial Government has designated Emerald Island as one of the key areas in its development of the “Beijing-Tianjin Leisure Tourism Industry Belt” and the “Beidaihe New Area,” holding vast potential for future growth.

By Bus: Take a local bus from Qinhuangdao to Changli, then transfer to the shuttle bus to Emerald Island at Changli Railway Station to reach the scenic area directly.
