Bingtangyu Great Wall Scenic Canyon

Bingtangyu Great Wall Scenic Canyon is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Bingtangyu is located in Daxinzhai Town, Fujinning County, Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province. It is said that in summer, ice forms within the "bingtang" (candied sugar), while in winter, steam rises from it — a destination that's warm in winter and cool in summer. Truly a landscape crafted by nature, the valley is covered with vine forests, featuring wild fruits such as Chinese jujube, wild grapes, and goji berries, which can be picked along the way.

Bingtangyu is one of the ten valleys in Dongyu Canyon, located about seven or eight kilometers east of Liangjiawan. It is part of the "Ten Valleys and One Summit" of Liangjiawan. From here, you can head north through Bijia Mountain to reach Huaguoshan (Flower and Fruit Mountain), or go east to Beiniuding and Tiannv Peak. The northern ridge along the Great Wall also leads to Beiniuding and Huangniuding.

Bingtangyu is a serene valley with beautiful peaks, giving visitors the feeling of being in a paradise on earth. What’s surprising is that there is also a lesser-known geological wonder here: from late April to late July, cold air rises from underground and condenses into ice when it meets the moist air at the surface. Every summer, this place serves as a natural refrigerator for locals, while in winter, the ice disappears without a trace, and instead, warm, moist air emerges from underground. This phenomenon has been reported multiple times by the Qinhuangdao Daily and Evening News, and geologists have visited the site for research, yet so far, there is no definitive explanation. When asked how long locals have known about this, they say it has been like this since people first lived here, so calling it a “marvel of the ages” or a “mystery of eternity” is no exaggeration.
