Tanghe Park in Qinhuangdao

Situated in the western part of Haigang District, Tanghe Park lies south of Hebei Street and east of the Tanghe River, with a total area of 64,000 square meters. In 1992, during the initial development phase, foundational tasks including demolition, land grading, and water pipeline installation were carried out. The park saw the planting of 6,456 trees and shrubs, 7,300 square meters of lawn, and over 5,000 potted plants, marking the early formation of Tanghe Park.

In 1995, the Liberation Monument in Tanghe Park was renovated, and a new park entrance was constructed. In 1997, a flower nursery was built in the park. Then in 1999, with an investment of 340,000 yuan, a 2,000-square-meter peony garden was developed, featuring 2,000 peony plants of over 30 varieties. Additionally, 510 square meters of garden paths were laid, 18,912 square meters of grass were sown, and more than 10,000 purple-leaf barberries and small-leaved boxwoods were planted, with 700 cubic meters of earthwork completed.

In 2000, as part of the “Creating Urban Forests” initiative, the expansion of Tanghe Park was completed. A 364-meter-long solid wall was demolished, and European-style antique fences and park gates were installed, along with colorful lighting decorations. The southern green space of 5,000 square meters was upgraded with 3,500 golden euonymus plants, 1,980 pots of various flowers, and 300 square meters of repaired pavement at the entrance. Additionally, a 300-square-meter office building was removed, the surrounding greenery was transformed, and a 1,000-square-meter rose garden was created, featuring 3,500 roses and 400 square meters of garden paths. Community organizations and the public were mobilized to plant a “21st Century Memorial Forest” around the monument on the northern side of the park, including 2,575 trees and shrubs, the upgrade of 5,000 square meters of green space, and the seeding of 5,000 square meters of lawn. To support the “National Fitness Program,” two sets of “fitness corridors” were installed on the eastern side of the park, meeting the recreational and fitness needs of local residents.

In 2002, an investment of 6.34 million yuan was made to comprehensively plan and transform Tanghe Park, covering an area of 50,000 square meters. By excavating land to form a lake and using the excavated soil to create hills, along with the addition of various recreational facilities, Tanghe Park was transformed into an open-style public park. In 2003, the park underwent lighting upgrades. Today, Tanghe Park features six major functional areas: leisure green space, waterscape, ornamental flower zone, cultural service area, memorial area, and sculpture area. With flowing streams, the fragrance of lotus flowers, lush cypresses and pines, and exquisitely designed pavilions and corridors, the park has become a popular destination for recreation and leisure among local citizens.

In 2008, the “Red Ribbon” in Tanghe Park, Qinhuangdao, was selected by the internationally renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler as one of the “New Seven Wonders of Architecture” in its April issue, gaining international recognition alongside iconic eco-architectural landmarks such as Wembley Stadium in the UK.
