Former Site of Yaohua Glass Factory

The former site of Yaohua Glass Factory is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former site of Yaohua Glass Factory is located in Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province. It was the site of China’s first large-scale glass manufacturing enterprise — the Qinhuangdao Yaohua Machinery Manufacturing Glass Co., Ltd., a Sino-Belgian joint venture established in 1922. At that time, it was the only Sino-foreign joint venture in northern China and played a pioneering role in the development of China’s glass industry. The first machine-made flat glass in China was produced here. The establishment of Yaohua Glass Factory is closely linked to a notable figure in the early Republican period — Zhou Xuexi, an outstanding industrialist in the late Qing and early Republican era, later hailed as the “Industrial Magnate of Northern China.” He was as renowned as another famous industrialist, Zhang Jian, and together they were known as “Zhang in the South, Zhou in the North.”

In May 2013, the former site of Yaohua Glass Factory was listed as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
