Shanhaiguan Confucius Temple

The Shanhaiguan Confucius Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Confucius Temple, also known as the Temple of the First Teacher, is located on the north side of West Avenue within the city of Shanhaiguan, originally within the campus of the former No. 3 Middle School. It is one of the very few temple structures in the Shanhaiguan area that dates back over 540 years. Historical records indicate that it was built in the 14th year of the Zhengtong reign of the Ming Dynasty (1449), and has since undergone multiple renovations and expansions. Together, they form a grand complex of Confucian architectural structures, featuring a strictly symmetrical layout. At the very front of the central axis lies the Dacheng Archway, followed to the north by the Screen Wall, Dacheng Gate, Left Jinsheng Gate, Right Yuzhen Gate, Pan Pond, Ji Gate, Temple of Eminent Officials, Temple of Local Sages, East and West Side Halls, Dacheng Hall, and Chongsheng Shrine. Most of the temple buildings have been destroyed, and today only the Dacheng Hall and the Western Side Hall remain.

On February 7, 2001, the Shanhaiguan Confucius Temple was designated as a Provincial-Level Cultural Relic Protection Unit by the People’s Government of Hebei Province.
