Dayuan Kiln Site

The Dayuan Kiln Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hunan Province.

The Dayuan Kiln Site is located in Dayuan Village, Gancun Town, Hengdong County, and belongs to the Hengshan Kiln system, dating back to the Song and Yuan dynasties. The kiln site is distributed across nine terraces within Dayuan Village, including Guigong Ancestral Hall and Yaobeiling, with four horse-hoof-shaped kilns discovered. The cultural strata are 1–8 meters thick. The products of each kiln were specialized, with some mainly producing bowls, plates, cups, and teapots, some focusing on jars, teapots, and black-glazed cups, and others specializing in large-sized jars.

The products of this kiln include bowls, cups, plates, teapots, cups, saucers, jars, vats, bottles, stoves, jars, and net sinkers. The body colors include brick red, bluish-gray, tile gray, and dark gray. The glaze colors include soy sauce, brown, green, blue, yellow, beige, light yellow, black, and brownish-red. The decorative techniques include powder-ground colored glaze painting, underglaze painted decoration, underglaze powder-colored painting, stamping, and incising. Powder-ground colored glaze painting is commonly seen on the bodies of teapots, stoves, and vats, featuring motifs such as peonies, chrysanthemums, and grass leaves. Stamping includes chrysanthemum petals, peonies, plum blossoms, and lotus-fish patterns on a water ripple ground, along with auspicious phrases such as “Fu” (blessing) and “Fu Shou Jia Qing” (blessing, longevity, and celebration), mostly found on the inner walls of bowls. Incised designs include floral patterns, large lotus petal motifs, and bamboo leaf patterns, commonly seen on the outer walls of bowls and stoves, as well as on the handles of teapots.
