Former Residence of Qin Xiaoyi

The former residence of Qin Xiaoyi is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Hunan Province.

The former residence of Qin Xiaoyi is located on the old street of Wuxi Town, Hengdong County. Qin Xiaoyi was steeped in Confucian classics and history from a young age through family tutelage, and had read extensively. In 1949, he went to Taiwan, where he served as Deputy Secretary-General of the Kuomintang and Director of the National Palace Museum in Taipei, among other positions. He presided over the operations of the National Palace Museum in Taipei for 18 years. Qin Xiaoyi was a typical government-sponsored scholar of the Kuomintang regime. While engaging in politics, he was also committed to academic research and produced numerous writings, including major works such as "Jinde Lu," "Exploring Confucian Mysteries," and "My Hometown."

A native of Hengshan County (now Hengdong County), Hunan Province, Qin Xiaoyi was born in February 1921 into a scholarly family. From an early age, he inherited his family’s academic tradition, became proficient in Confucian classics and history, and read widely. After graduating from the Law School of Shanghai College of Commerce, he furthered his studies at the University of Oklahoma in the United States, earning a doctorate in the humanities. Wuxi Town: The three townships of Dedian, Limu, and Mojing were merged with Wuxi Town to form the current Wuxi Town.

Wuxi Town is located at the foot of Yangshan Mountain by the Miluo River, facing the county town across the river with a bridge connecting them. According to the "Hengshan County Annals," “Behind Wuxi Market lies a vast area five li wide, where Wu Sangui once gathered his troops.” Hence the name Wuxi. Legend has it that when Wu Sangui led his troops here, he found the surrounding landscape flanked by mountains resembling dragons, elephants, monkeys, geese, and lions, with a terrain that was steep and easy to defend but hard to attack. He planned to establish a military headquarters here, train troops, and make long-term plans. However, after failing to find water by digging a well, he led his troops to Hengyang.
