West Lake is one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Hengyang, renowned for its reputation as “White Lotus Blooms at Night on West Lake,” and is listed among China’s Thirty-Six West Lakes.

Hengyang West Lake Park is located at the northern end of the central urban area in Shigu District, bordering the Zhen River to the north, adjacent to Zhenxiang Avenue to the east, and surrounded by roads of residential development areas to the west and south. Covering an area of 300 acres, it consists of 54% land and 46% water surface. The park uses hills, water, and green spaces to divide the area, creating a landscape of mountains and waters that forms an artistic ambiance of tranquility amid the hustle and bustle. The functional zoning of West Lake Park is as follows: the eastern and western sections are designated as youth and senior activity areas respectively, distinctly separating “active” and “quiet” zones to cater to the different preferences of the young and the elderly. The northern section and the island area serve as the main scenic spots of the park, suitable for visitors of all levels to enjoy the lake and mountain views. The southern end mainly houses management and service facilities. The water surfaces vary between concentrated and scattered areas, combining both to accommodate diverse water activities. The South Lake is expansive, ideal for speedboats; the Middle Lake is winding and serene, perfect for small pleasure boats; the North Lake is richly planted with lotuses, great for boating and admiring the blossoms. The northwest corner of the lake is designated as a fishing area, offering a leisurely charm that invites visitors to linger.

West Lake Park adopts a fresh and bright style as the main theme of its landscaping. In terms of layout, it creates a landscape of mountains and waters centered around water features and green spaces, providing visitors with an artistic experience that is refreshing, elegant, majestic, and unrestrained. The terrain features undulating landforms and diverse landscapes. Utilizing the water scenery, pavilions, terraces, towers, corridors, pavilions, and bridges are arranged along the lake shore in a well-spaced and distinctive manner, offering visitors scenic views. Key structures feature glazed tile roofs, while general buildings typically use white plaster walls, gray tiles, or flat roofs, recreating the architectural charm of the Jiangnan water towns. Flower stands and corridors are close to the water, and some lakeside retaining walls are intentionally lower than the overflow outlets, allowing water to spill onto the banks and form small islets planted with reeds and other aquatic plants, creating a wild and natural atmosphere. Greening is divided into zones with distinct functional features. Plants vary in height, density, and arrangement, with clear layering and seasonal changes. Large water bodies (such as the Lotus Lake) and open lawn layouts designed with plant landscaping are complemented by uniquely shaped garden ornaments. Winding paths, small bridges over flowing water, and lush flowers and leaves each offer their own charm. The park combines the traditional style of landscape gardens with a modern, open atmosphere.
