Shuiyang Forest is located in the Alishan area of Chiayi. It formed as a barrier lake after the 921 earthquake when the upper reaches of the Shigu Panxi River were blocked. It is about 1 kilometer long, 200 meters wide, and reaches a maximum depth of 16 meters, offering stunning scenery.

However, the cedar trees in Shuiyang Forest have been submerged in water for a long time. The deep lake water has dulled the original emerald green of the Taiwan red cypress, creating a desolate scene of deadwood — yet this also gives rise to a unique beauty of decay. Hence, it earned the name “Shuiyang Forest” (Water Ripple Forest).

Shuiyang Forest is at an altitude of about 1,800 meters, but due to its remote mountain location, a round trip takes six hours one way and twelve hours total. Hikers and travelers with limited experience should be accompanied by a professional guide and must be fully prepared with the right gear to prevent repeated incidents of getting lost in the mountains and requiring rescue.
