The Giant Thorny Tree at Qiaomutang is located by the river at Yingzhou Temple in Qiaomutang, Qiyuntang Town, Buoyunqiao. A yellow thorny bush (originally a shrub, referred to as “yellow camphor” in the Miscellaneous Writings section of the Tongzhi-era Qiyang County Annals) has remarkably grown into a towering tree. In the seventh year of the Zhiyuan era during the Yuan Emperor Shundi’s reign (1347), the scholar Zeng Fuzhong and his younger brother migrated from Jiangxi to Hunan. Several years later, they built an ancestral hall near this giant thorny tree, naming it “Qiaomutang…”

Several years later, they built an ancestral hall near this giant thorny tree, naming it “Qiaomutang.” According to measurements by the county tree survey team, the tree stands 15.4 meters tall, with a trunk diameter of 93 centimeters and a crown spread of 9.7 square meters, making it the oldest tree in the county. The main trunk of the tree has now developed a trough-like shape, with the northern side hollowed out and dense branches thriving on the southern side. Even in spring and summer, it remains lush and full of vitality.
