Introduction The site of the South Bank Private School is located to the west of Comrade Mao Zedong's former residence. Built during the Qing Dynasty, it features blue bricks and tiles, white painted walls, and covers an area of nearly 400 square meters. Originally part of the communal property of the Zou family ancestral hall, the right side was once used as a private school. In 1901, when Mao Zedong was eight years old, he began his early education here and studied for two years. His teacher, Zou Chunpei, first taught Mao the "Three Character Classic" and "Hundred Family Surnames," followed by Confucian classics such as "The Analects," "The Book of Songs," and "Mencius." Mao studied diligently and was deeply influenced by ancient culture. After the liberation, the South Bank was inhabited by local farmers and was nationalized in 1965. In 1968, under the direction of the Shaoshan Revolutionary Memorial Site Construction Office and the Shaoshan Mao Zedong Memorial Hall, a comprehensive renovation was carried out to preserve the original appearance of the private school. It has been open to the public since the end of that year. In September 1972, the South Bank was listed as a Hunan Provincial Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. In October 1983, the Hunan Provincial People's Government issued a document including the South Bank within the scope of the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit—Mao Zedong's Former Residence.
