The Memorial Hall of Comrade Mao Zedong in Shaoshan is located at the foot of Yinfeng Mountain in Shaoshan Village.

Construction of the memorial hall began on May 10, 1964, was completed on August 20, and opened to the public on October 1. Initially named the "Exhibition Hall of the Former Residence of Comrade Mao Zedong in Shaoshan," the plaque was inscribed by Guo Moruo. The hall originally had four exhibition rooms displaying cultural relics and related historical materials from Mao Zedong’s youth up to the establishment of the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Base. In 1965, three more exhibition rooms were added, showcasing artifacts and historical materials from Mao’s revolutionary activities during the Agrarian Revolutionary War until 1965. In 1969, the building was expanded, increasing the floor area from over 2,700 square meters to 3,185 square meters, and the number of exhibition rooms grew to nine.

In November 1982, with the approval of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, it was renamed the "Memorial Hall of Comrade Mao Zedong in Shaoshan." On April 2 of the following year, Deng Xiaoping inscribed the new name.

In 1993 and 2003, to commemorate the 100th and 110th anniversaries of Mao Zedong’s birth, major renovations were carried out twice. The revised exhibition on Mao Zedong’s life and achievements was titled "China Produced a Mao Zedong," featuring over 400 exhibits and multiple multimedia installations. The content was divided into seven sections based on Mao’s life and major accomplishments: "Aspiring to Save the Nation, Pursuing Truth"; "Joining the Party’s Founding, Awakening Workers and Peasants"; "Establishing the People’s Army, Pioneering the Revolutionary Path"; "Upholding Unity Against Japan, Establishing Mao Zedong Thought"; "Commanding Decisive Battles, Founding New China"; "Building the Nation, Laying the Foundation"; and "Hard Exploration, Building a Strong Country." Additionally, there were five special thematic sections: "The Six Martyrs of the Mao Family"; "An Enduring Legacy – Exhibition of Mao Zedong’s Personal Belongings"; "Scenes of Shaoshan Stir Reflection – Visits by Central and Local Leaders and Distinguished Figures"; "International Friends in Shaoshan"; and "Deng Xiaoping and Mao Zedong."

In June 1997, the Memorial Hall of Comrade Mao Zedong in Shaoshan was designated as a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee.
