Mao Zedong Relics Museum
The Mao Zedong Relics Museum is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit, a Classic Red Tourism Scenic Area, and a Patriotic Education Base.
The Mao Zedong Relics Museum has a total construction area of 19,000 square meters. It houses four exhibitions: "Eternal Legacy – Exhibition of Mao Zedong’s Relics," "Exhibition of Chairman Mao’s Daily-Use Porcelain," "Exhibition of Mao Zedong’s Collection of Records and Tapes," and "Exhibition of Artworks Collected by the Shaoshan Memorial Hall of Comrade Mao Zedong." A total of 1,008 relics of Mao Zedong are displayed here.
Upon entering the Mao Zedong Relics Museum, visitors are greeted by Mao’s handwritten calligraphy reading “Serve the People.” This leads to the museum’s main exhibition, "Eternal Legacy – Exhibition of Mao Zedong’s Relics," which covers an area of over 2,000 square meters and is divided into five sections: "Diligent in Governance and Wholeheartedly Serving the People," "Advocating Simplicity and Integrity," "Erudite and Thoughtful, Tirelessly Studious," "Family Love Like a Song, Friendship Like the Sea," and "Elegant Interests and Open-Mindedness." These sections authentically recreate the daily life of Mao Zedong. Among the exhibits, multiple letters and poems handwritten by Mao are being shown to the public for the first time.
The museum’s relic storage also preserves and protects 6,536 additional items. The relics on display reflect the simple and frugal lifestyle of this great leader. A pajama worn by Mao in his later years, patched up 73 times, moved countless visitors. The barber’s tool kit used by Mao, also displayed for the first time, includes vintage tools such as a wooden comb, manual clippers, and a razor, evoking deep emotions among visitors. Other everyday items on exhibit include four toothbrushes, three bottles of tooth powder, one tube of toothpaste, and two enamel mugs — all original items.
The museum also displays an account book from Mao’s life, which records the details of repayment to Zhang Shizhao: To thank Zhang for his fundraising support for the revolution in the early 1920s, Mao began in 1963 to give Zhang 2,000 yuan annually from his royalties under the pretense of “repayment,” to help with his household expenses.
