Dong'an Wen Tower

Dong'an Wen Tower is a cultural relic protection unit of Yongzhou City.

The Wen Tower is situated on a massive rock by the Xiang River in the eastern part of Shiqi Town. Constructed in the 13th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1748), it stands 24 meters high and has a base 10 meters wide. The outer structure is made of blue stone, while the inner part consists of blue-fired bricks. The tower has seven levels and eight sides, with each level adorned with overhanging eaves and dougong. The front of the lower level has a small door through which people can enter and exit. The other levels are solid inside and not accessible to the public. Each side of every level is decorated with four small arched doorways, and the second level features plaques inscribed with “Purple Air Comes from the East,” “South Pole to Xiaoxiang,” “Green Hues of the Western Hills,” and “North [illegible]” according to their orientation. Today, the tower still stands firmly by the Xiang River, well preserved.

In 2003, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the municipal government.

Shiqi Town: A town under the jurisdiction of Dong’an County. A post station called Shiqi was established in the early Ming Dynasty, and a patrol inspection office was set up in the Qing Dynasty. After 1949, the town was officially established but was later abolished, only to be reinstated in 1983. Located in the southeastern part of the county, where the Shiqi River meets the Xiang River, it is 21 kilometers from the county seat, covering an area of 117.6 square kilometers with a population of 36,000. The town government is based in Shiqi. National Highway 207 runs through the town.
