Wuling Well

Wuling Well is one of the Twenty-Eight Ancient Wells of Hunan. It is as renowned as Liuyi Well on Junshan Island in Dongting Lake and Baisha Well in Changsha, and is counted among the Ten Scenic Spots of the ancient capital Liang, known as “Wuling 0.” The well water is warm in winter and cool in summer, with a fresh, sweet taste. There have been many poems and writings about “Wuling 0” throughout the dynasties, especially the seven-character quatrain by the famous Tang Dynasty poet Wang Changling, which is particularly outstanding:

Red peach blossoms dot the early spring scene,

Deep, clear, sweet well water enhances their sheen.

The east wind has seen all the flowers’ fair face,
