Luping Township’s Jinyuan Village in Hecheng District is about 21 kilometers from downtown Huaihua. County and township-level roads run through the village, making transportation convenient. The village boasts a beautiful natural environment, a profound historical legacy, and rich cultural heritage. There are over 20 ancient trees in the village that are more than 50 years old. The entire ancient village is embraced by mountains and encircled by water, with the landscape forming a harmonious composition where the ancient settlement sits like a pearl cradled by nature—resembling the Buddhist gesture of a hand holding a precious jewel. This site was considered an auspicious location according to ancient feng shui principles, exuding exceptional beauty. Since ancient times, the area has been known for its strong literary culture and has long been honored as the “Home of Literature.” The village features grand and well-planned architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties; countless historical relics subtly reflect the wisdom of the local people, showcase the profound cultural elegance of the ancient settlement, and document the region’s storied past. Historic sites such as Liangmu Garden, Lotus Pond, and Xingyi Primary School still remain, while legends such as the hidden treasure of Chen Zuyu, Wu Sangui’s military garrison, and the divine protection of General Yue resonate with wonder.

The architectural complex was initially built during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The buildings face south and are all between one to three bays deep, featuring post-and-lintel timber-framed structures with brick walls. Each structure typically has three bays in width and two in depth, topped with double-sloped roofs covered in small blue tiles, flanked by horse-head shaped gables adorned with colorful paintings. To this day, the ancient buildings of Jinyuan Village are relatively well-preserved. There are two structures with European-style elements dating back to the late Ming and early Qing periods, four century-old ancestral mansions, and over 30 well-maintained residential houses, covering a total area of more than 6,000 square meters. Among them, the traditional eight-character gates are particularly distinctive and well preserved. The village is paved with flagstones from the inside out, and there are multiple lotus ponds scattered throughout. Remnants such as carved stone pillars, large and small stone jars, fan-shaped steps, and Ming-Qing furniture can be found everywhere. Many residences feature exquisitely carved doors, windows, fences, and woodwork designed for moisture-proofing, earthquake resistance, and insect prevention. The overall layout of the village is rational and well-arranged, with orderly structures and fine craftsmanship. Ancient alleyways, wells, lintels, columns, and the calligraphy and carvings on the walls vary in style and content, reflecting the aesthetics and ideals of different eras and their respective owners—forming a sizable complex of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture. From a distance, the village resembles a hand cradling a jewel, embraced by rolling hills and murmuring streams, with green-tiled white-walled houses complementing the lotus ponds, all integrated beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

The residences within this architectural complex possess deep historical and cultural significance, offering important historical, artistic, and scientific value for the study of the formation and development of rural architectural art in southwestern Hunan during the Ming and Qing periods.
