Former Residence and Tomb of Ge Jianhao

The former residence and tomb of Ge Jianhao are designated as cultural heritage sites under protection by Hunan Province.

The former residence of Ge Jianhao is situated in Huangbitang Village, Yongfeng Town, Shuangfeng County, Hunan Province. Constructed during the Republican era, it is a brick-and-wood building with earthen walls and blue tiles, spanning around 450 square meters, and embodies the classic features of Jiangnan-style residences. From 1932 to 1943, Ge Jianhao spent her modest later years in this rural retreat alongside her daughter Cai Qingxi, grandson Cai Bo, granddaughter Liu Ang, Li Tete, and others. The site stands as a rare and significant red cultural and historical landmark.

The tomb of Ge Jianhao is located in Huangbitang Village, Yongfeng Town, Shuangfeng County, Hunan Province. In March 1943, after the passing of Madam Cai (Ge Jianhao), her family laid her to rest here. Upon hearing the news in Yan’an, Mao Zedong wrote a memorial couplet: “An old woman with the virtue of the new; sons as martyrs, daughters as heroines.” In September 1985, the People’s Government of Shuangfeng County erected a monument in her honor: the Monument to Madam Cai (Ge Jianhao). The inscription was penned by Comrade Chen Yun. The tomb is surrounded by lush pines and cypresses, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere. It is often visited by people paying tribute, serving as a highly meaningful patriotic education site.

In 2019, the former residence and tomb of Ge Jianhao were approved as part of the tenth batch of provincial-level cultural heritage protection units in Hunan Province.
