The Temple of the Heavenly King is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Temple of the Heavenly King, also known as the Shrine of Three Lords or the Temple of Three Kings, is located at the foot of Guanjing Mountain in the southeastern part of the city. Visitors can hike up to the temple via a hundred stone steps from Dongmenjing.

This is a group of exquisitely crafted ancient buildings. It is said that the shrine was built to honor Yang Yinglong’s eighth-generation descendants—Yang Yinglong, Yang Yinghu, and Yang Yingbao—who “commanded thirty-six men, killed nine thousand Miao people,” loyally served the imperial court, and brutally suppressed the Miao people. They were each granted noble titles by the emperor but were later poisoned by the court.

The Temple of the Heavenly King is not only an exemplary piece of ancient ethnic architecture, but also a memorial site for the Xinhai Revolution. Between 1910 and 1911, Tang Lichen and Tian Yingquan, patriotic Miao figures from Fenghuang, established a new revolutionary regime—the Xiangxi Military Government—here, and celebrated its founding at the Temple of the Heavenly King. To this day, the temple still preserves slogans and manifestos from the Xinhai Uprising.
