Ruins Hide a Sea of Fiery Red Flowers: A Hidden Phoenix Tree Paradise

Every year when graduation season arrives, the blooming phoenix trees resemble a blazing sea of red flames and are acclaimed as one of the most vibrantly colored trees in the world. The stunning scenery created by the phoenix trees alongside ancient ruins and old houses, besides the well-known Kaohsiung Dahu Tomato Factory, can also be seen at the Clay Mountains of Caoshan in Tainan.

Located in Qingguailiao, Caoshan, Zuozhen, Tainan, this place is not only famous for the Clay Mountains scenic area but also features a phoenix tree over 80 years old, set off beautifully by the nearby Lin family’s ancestral home—making it a hidden gem loved by photography enthusiasts. Currently, the bright red flowers are in full bloom, resembling a flaming torch rising from the chalky landscape, truly eye-catching.

This phoenix tree stands nearly four stories tall, leaning against the earthen wall of the Lin family’s old residence, creating a dramatic backdrop with the texture of the traditional architecture.

The phoenix tree, which has lived for over 80 years, is close in age to the old house. Every year in May and June when it blooms, it adds vibrant color to the harsh Clay Mountains landscape and the dilapidated ancestral home.

The old house is located near “Jade Maiden Peak,” one of the scenic highlights of Zuozhen’s Clay Mountains. In addition to photographing the old building and the large tree, visitors can also capture the unique mudstone terrain. As the seasons and times of day change, the Clay Mountains of Caoshan also display different faces.
