The Chen Family Ancient Residence

The Chen Family Ancient Residence is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The Chen Family Ancient Residence was built by Chen Kaijia, a second-rank military official of the Qing Dynasty during the Qianlong era, after his retirement. It served as the filming location for the residence of "Mountain Leopard" in the TV series "The Pacification of Bandits in Wulong Mountain."

The residence has three courtyards and three wings, symmetrically arranged. Passing the screen wall, a pair of stone lions guard the second gate, above which hangs a red lantern. This is a beautiful moon gate featuring delicate wooden lattice carvings—it was formerly a place to serve tea to guests. In the rooms on both sides, there are grand beds painted in vermilion and decorated with gold, exuding opulence. The courtyard is filled with a festive atmosphere. The gate pillars also hang red couplets with golden characters, prepared for weddings by ancestors, along with a plaque inscribed with “Auspicious Union of Phoenixes.” At the entrance of the last courtyard, round lanterns are lit. In the center hangs a portrait of a figure dressed in the attire of a military official, looking dignified and commanding. The flanking couplets, “Warm-hearted deeds built the East Mountain, swords drawn and horses leaping to guard the Central Plains,” recount the lifetime achievements of this high-ranking imperial official.
