Ten Thousand People Tower

Ten Thousand People Tower is a cultural relic protection unit of Fenghuang County.

Ten Thousand People Tower is located on the banks of the Tuojiang River at the foot of Qinglong Mountain. To the east stands the exquisitely carved Xiachang Pavilion, and to the west is the magnificent Wind and Rain Bridge. The tower is 21 meters tall, standing firmly on the north bank of the Tuojiang River, with its reflection mirrored in the river, creating a spectacular view of two towers—one on land and one in the water. Originally, Ten Thousand People Tower was a scripture paper furnace tower built during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty for burning used written paper. The original tower had three stories and was 11 meters tall, with a regular hexagonal body, triple eaves and six angles, topped with a colorful glass gourd treasure dome. The upper outer wall was inscribed with the words “Sunset Rays Pierce the Dipper,” the middle level with “Pillar in the Midst of the Current,” and the lower level with “Flowing Fragrance of Literature.” The small tower was delicate and elegant, but unfortunately, it was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, leaving only ruins. The current tower was rebuilt on the site of the former scripture paper furnace tower with the support of renowned painter Huang Yongyu, led by the Tuojiang Town Government, and funded by public donations. It is a seven-story hexagonal brick tower, adorned with painted decorations and sculptures; each of the six sides features half-moon arched doors and windows, with couplets inscribed on the lower-level doors. Above the main entrance facing the river is engraved the name “Ten Thousand People Tower,” symbolizing its reconstruction through the contributions of ten thousand people.
