Fenghuang Nanhuamen Gate

Nanhuamen Gate is located in Fenghuang County, western Hunan, and serves as one of the entrances to the ancient town of Fenghuang. It is also a must-pass spot for travelers visiting Fenghuang and can be considered a landmark of the area. It essentially marks the boundary between the old and new parts of Fenghuang — entering through Nanhuamen takes you into the ancient town, while exiting leads you into the new urban district.

This area is also the departure point for one-day tours around Fenghuang and the boarding spot for bonfire evening events, making it especially lively in the early morning and evening. In addition, the vicinity of Nanhuamen is where you’ll find the highest concentration of hostels and hotels. Next to Nanhuamen is Wuhe Park, which offers an excellent view of the ancient town. You can reach this spot by taking Fenghuang Bus No. 1 or No. 2 — once you get off, you’ll see the imposing Nanhuamen Gate right in front of you. From the top of the gate, you can overlook half of the ancient town. The upper level of the gate stays cool in summer, and it’s a great place to enjoy the cool evening breeze and take in the night view of the ancient town.
