Hongyu Mountain Villa Great Wall Cave Scenic Area

The Hongyu Mountain Villa Great Wall Cave Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a World Cultural Heritage site.

The Hongyu Mountain Villa Scenic Area is situated in Hongyukou Village, Wuchong’an Township, Qian’an City, and is a national 3A-level tourist destination. It centers around a marble Great Wall as its support and a gold cave as its axis, supplemented by mountains, forests, waterfalls, Qijian Peak, temples, ancient plant fossils, and other natural landscapes (the area contains rich carbonaceous shale, oil shale, gold ore veins, and manganese iron ore), forming a complete series of Great Wall and cave tourism products. The scenic area includes over 20 attractions such as the Gold Cave, Yunya Lake, Yunya Temple, Divine Turtle Probing the Sea, Shuiguan Great Wall, Tongtian Waterfall, Double-Faced Buddha, Heavenly-Facing Giant Buddha, Marble Great Wall, Qijian Peak, General’s Hat, and Yunya Village. The lesser-known marble Great Wall runs across the entire scenic zone. With its beautiful mountains and pleasant scenery, it is an ideal place for health and leisure. The uniquely impressive Gold Cave stretches over 10,000 meters in length and covers a total area of more than 50,000 square meters. The cave walls feature clearly visible gold ore veins of varying thicknesses and large areas of ancient plant fossils. Inside the cave, there are variously shaped and vibrantly colored stalactites and stalagmites such as stone stalagmites, pillars, flowers, shields, flags, and draperies—some resembling humans, birds, beasts, or various worldly scenes. There are also countless jagged stone pillars that look like gods, immortals, or a gathering of ten thousand Buddhas, creating a fantastical and magical world.

Legends and Anecdotes

Qijian Peak: The national hero Qi Jiguang once guarded the border here. While engaging in both farming and military training, he repeatedly repelled invading enemies. After one major victory, filled with excitement and confidence, he thrust his sword into this peak and declared, “With my sword here, who dares to invade?” The next day, he found that the sword had turned into a towering mountain peak. Henceforth, it has been known as “Qijian Peak,” truly embodying the saying, “One sword parts the mountain, repels the foe, and returns to Liaodong.”

General’s Hat Mountain: Once, while Qi Jiguang was playing chess with the abbot of Yunya Temple, soldiers reported that pirates were planning a surprise attack. Calm and composed, Qi whispered instructions to the soldier, then handed him his helmet. Following orders, the soldier rushed up the mountain and placed the helmet atop a huge rock at the peak. When the enemy reached the mountainside, the Ming army released a torrent of rolling logs and stones from the mountaintop, inflicting heavy losses. When the invaders looked up and saw what they believed to be General Qi himself on the mountain, they fled in terror. To commemorate Qi Jiguang, locals named the mountain “General’s Hat Mountain” and the rock holding the helmet “General’s Stone,” which continues to frighten would-be invaders.

Divine Turtle Probing the Sea: Legend says that when the Great Yu was taming the floods in the northern Youdu—this very place—heaven sent a black turtle to carry “breathable soil” and assist Yu. The turtle greatly helped Yu’s efforts. The waterways it helped dredge became the countless rivers we see today, including the Luan River in our region, which was one of the rivers tamed by Yu. In recognition of the turtle’s contribution, heaven decided to reward it by granting it Youdu to guard forever, ensuring peace in the land. Deeply grateful, the turtle pledged eternal loyalty. But as a creature of water, it often longed for its watery home, frequently gazing toward the sea. After all, having left its homeland for millennia, how could it not miss home? Perhaps those downward gazes are tears of homesickness?
