Juxian Valley

Juxian Valley, originally named Daxian Gully, is located on the western foothills of Yaodai Mountain (also known as Yudai Mountain), part of the Yan Mountain range in the northeast of Fengrun County. Stretching 3 kilometers in total, it consists of five gullies. Legend has it that Yaodai Mountain was carried here from the East China Sea by the deity Erlang Shen. The mountain is perennially shrouded in auspicious clouds, resembling an imperial sash wrapped around it, hence its alternate name “Yudai Mountain.” One day, when the Queen Mother of the West descended to earth for a stroll, she accidentally dropped her golden hairpin here, slicing open a deep gully in the mountain. The resulting crevice is long, steep, and flanked by sheer cliffs. The valley was once home to monsters, snakes, foxes, and wolves, and locals dared not venture in alone. To protect the region, the Jade Emperor assigned heavenly generals to guard the valley, and many immortals also gathered here. Since then, the scenery has become breathtaking, and the people have enjoyed safe passage. Juxian Valley offers scenic beauty in all four seasons: in spring, mountain flowers bloom and plants thrive; in summer, shaded paths offer cool breezes and birdsong enhances the tranquility; in autumn, vibrant foliage paints the hills in layers of color; and in winter, pine trees dusted with snow and frost-lined stone paths create a serene landscape. Within the valley, there are vividly shaped rocks such as the Mountain God Stone Statue, the Eternal Flame Incense, the Garnet Stone, and the Immortal Pointing Platform. There’s also the Dragon Eye Sacred Spring, known for its uniquely sweet water on the south side and bitter taste on the north, the Jade Emperor Temple built during the Tang Dynasty that still attracts worshippers today, as well as the Pappa Cave and Mama Cave, which played immortal roles in protecting revolutionaries during the Anti-Japanese War. Each attraction tells a beautiful story.

Juxian Valley is situated on the southwestern foothills of Yaodai Mountain, stretching approximately 2.5 kilometers from north to south and 2.6 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area of about 6.5 square kilometers. It runs in a southwest-northeast direction, with the 400-meter-high Jianfeng Peak on the western side, and from south to north on the eastern side are Shelianyu Gully, Xiaoxian Gully, Juxian Valley, and Bisesiniu Yu Gully, ending at Shifang Gully to the north. Just a little over 2 kilometers northeast from Huohuangyu Village, you’ll enter the valley. With its deep valleys, towering peaks, winding slopes, and spectacular sights, it is truly a notable tourist destination in eastern Hebei.

Juxian Valley stretches from east to west, about 2.6 kilometers in length. Walking in from the valley entrance, the path starts off relatively flat, with a narrow trail tucked among knee-high green grass. Ahead looms a steep cliff that spans the view. Looking up, amidst the blue sky and white clouds, flocks of warblers flit like drifting dust particles high above the cliff top. At the summit of the cliff stand two pillar-like rocks, each over 5 meters tall. A closer look reveals them resembling two burly, stalwart men gazing into the distance—like two celestial guards watching over Juxian Valley. Immediately, a sense of mystery and enchantment envelops visitors.

Venturing further into the valley, the ground is rugged with jagged rocks and crisscrossing pits and ditches. Steep cliffs rise sharply on both sides, as if trying to rival the heavens. Despite the narrow and deep terrain, the valley remains cool and pleasant even in the height of summer. In winter, it retains a surprising warmth, with patches of green grass still bravely standing along the edges of rocky crevices. As a result, the area is not only rich in plant diversity but also home to dozens of valuable medicinal herbs such as ganoderma, angelica, and salvia.
