Zhuge Liang Square

Zhuge Liang Square was built by the people of Xiangyang City to promote historical and cultural traditions and to commemorate Zhuge Liang, revered as "the one outstanding figure among three generations." It is one of the iconic landmarks of Xiangyang City, where the Xiangyang Municipal Government erected a bronze statue of Zhuge Liang. The square not only symbolizes the wisdom of the Chinese people but also represents China’s largest figurative sculpture project.

Located in the central section of Changhong North Road, Fancheng District, Xiangyang City—a historic and cultural city—the square covers an area of 106 hectares. It features a modern large-scale stadium, recreational shooting range, swimming pool, convention and exhibition center, musical fountain, and leisure plaza. Zhuge Liang Square is a large urban ecological complex integrating culture, sports, entertainment, conventions, business, apartments, and park functions.

Zhuge Liang Square has hosted China’s top ten brand festivals multiple times, including the “Xiangyang Zhuge Liang Cultural Tourism Festival.”

Bronze Statue of Zhuge Liang

To promote historical and cultural traditions, enhance the prestige of this historic city, establish the image of Xiangyang, and create a prime commercial location, the Xiangyang Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government specially commissioned the bronze statue of Zhuge Liang in the square. It serves not only as a symbol of the wisdom of the Chinese people but also as the country’s largest figurative sculpture project.

The statue is forged from red copper, with the character designed to be 14 meters tall and 10 meters wide, weighing 35 tons. Including the base, the entire sculpture stands approximately 18 meters high. It was designed by Professor Sun Wei, a renowned designer from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and produced by the same institution. The bronze statue project at Zhuge Liang Square is a key component of the initial phase of the square’s construction and serves as its most iconic landmark. The statue of Zhuge Liang stands proudly on the square, chest out and head high, holding a fan in his right hand, with sharp, visionary eyes and a mind full of strategy. Against the backdrop of blue sky and white clouds, it appears even more heroic and vigorous. At the base of the statue is an inscribed stone tablet by the Xiangyang Municipal People's Government, narrating Zhuge Liang’s life and the admiration he has received through generations.

Zhuge Liang (July 23, 181 – August 28, 234), courtesy name Kongming, also known by his style name Wolong (or Fulong), was a Han Chinese from Yangdu, Langya (present-day Yinan County, Linyi City, Shandong Province). He served as the Chancellor of the Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period and was an outstanding statesman, strategist, inventor, and military leader. During his lifetime, he was granted the title Marquis of Wuxiang and posthumously honored as Marquis Zhongwu. The later Eastern Jin dynasty further honored him with the posthumous title King Wuxing in recognition of his military genius.
