Yuan Shutang Education Base

The Yuan Shutang Education Base is located in Yuanchong Township, Laohekou City. This township lies at the junction of northwestern Hubei, adjacent to the water intake source of the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, and was one of the early revolutionary bases in northwestern Hubei.

The Yuan Shutang Education Base currently consists of the Yuan Shutang Memorial Hall and the Yuan Shutang Memorial Park, and has been designated as a patriotic education base for both Xiangyang City and Laohekou City.

The Yuan Shutang Memorial Hall covers an area of 3,000 square meters, with a construction area of 1,500 square meters. It is a building that blends traditional art with modern style. The hall consists of two main sections: an audio-visual screening room and an exhibition hall. The exhibition hall is divided into four parts: Yuan Shutang, the Yuan Sisters (Yuan Puzhi, Yuan Zhenzhi, Yuan Xizhi, and Yuan Xuanzhi), early Party members influenced by Yuan Shutang, and Yuan Shutang’s daily life. Through the use of sound, light, electricity, and other technical means, it comprehensively and vividly presents the glorious lives of Martyr Yuan Shutang and other related revolutionary predecessors.

The Yuan Shutang Memorial Park covers an area of approximately 120 acres and consists of several parts, including a red culture square, a red branch, Red Pavilion, martyrs’ tombs, and a memorial forest. The memorial park officially opened on April 1, 2010.

　Yuan Shutang, whose given name was Guokun and courtesy name Shutang, was a native of Yuanchong Village, Yuanchong Township, Laohekou. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1926. During the Great Revolution, he served as the county magistrate of Puqi, Wuchang, and Huangpi counties in Hubei Province. In 1927, he was dispatched by the Northern Hubei Special Committee to return to Guanghua to restore and develop the Party organization. He successively served as a member of the Northern Hubei Special Committee, secretary of the Guanghua County Committee, and a member of the Xinghua Central County Committee, leading the revolutionary struggles in Guanghua, Guanghua, and Gucheng counties. On the evening of May 4, 1930, while studying and deploying work for the five counties of Guanghua, Guanghua, Gucheng, Xiangyang, and Zaoyang, he was suddenly surrounded and attacked by reactionary militias. Yuan Shutang died a heroic death on the spot at the age of 46.

From Laohekou City Central Bus Station to Yuanchong Street, buses depart daily starting at 6:30 AM and ending at 5:30 PM, with a bus every 30 minutes. The journey takes about 40 minutes. For self-driving: Laohekou City – Liji Road – Yuanchong Street

Yuanchong Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Laohekou City. In 1958, it belonged to the Wuxing Commune, and in 1987, Yuanchong Township was established. It is located in the northern part of the city, 15 kilometers from the municipal government. It covers an area of 60.4 square kilometers and has a population of 17,000.
