Liujia Yard Watermelon
Liujia Yard Watermelon is a specialty of Liujia Yard Village, Houjiamiao Township, Xuanhua District, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. The watermelons from Liujia Yard Village are known for their thin rinds and high sugar content, making them highly popular among consumers. The government of Houjiamiao Township has specially printed two-dimensional anti-counterfeiting labels, giving every watermelon an “identity card.”
The soil in Liujia Yard Village is sandy, and the climate is particularly suitable for watermelon cultivation. With over a hundred years of planting history, continuous improvements by expert growers, and the introduction of new varieties, the watermelons from Liujia Yard Village have become favored by consumers for their outstanding qualities such as thin rinds, few seeds, and high sugar content. Watermelon farming has become the “primary industry” for local farmers and has also made Liujia Yard Village one of the first villages to achieve prosperity. Under active guidance from higher authorities, a “Zhangjiakou Liujia Yard Watermelon” production base, led by Liujia Yard Village, has been established, covering a planting area of more than 2,000 acres with an annual output exceeding 10,000 tons. Products are sold as far as Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. Calculating based on a minimum yield of 4,500 kilograms per acre and a minimum selling price of 1.5 yuan per kilogram, the output value of watermelons per acre can reach nearly ten thousand yuan.
