Jidong Nanpu Oilfield
The newly discovered Jidong Nanpu Oilfield is located in the Caofeidian Port area within Tangshan City, Hebei Province. Geologically, it lies in the Nanpu Depression, situated in the northern part of the Huanghua Sag of the Bohai Bay Basin, and falls within the exploration and development scope of PetroChina's Jidong Oilfield Company.
Oil and gas exploration in the Jidong coastal area began in 1988. Over the next 14 years, both self-operated and cooperative exploration were carried out, but no substantial breakthroughs were achieved. Starting in 2002, PetroChina adjusted its deployment, strengthened the organization and leadership of exploration efforts, innovated management systems, shifted exploration strategies, enhanced comprehensive geological research, intensified high-precision 3D seismic exploration, and applied a series of advanced technologies such as extended-reach deviated wells and horizontal well drilling. These efforts overcame numerous challenges in geological exploration and engineering construction. In September 2004, the Laobunan 1 well achieved a major breakthrough, discovering high-yield industrial oil flow at a rate of 700 cubic meters per day in the Ordovician system. Building on this, through nearly two and a half years of comprehensive exploration, the Jidong Nanpu Oilfield has identified four oil-bearing structures, with the tertiary oil and gas geological reserves (equivalent) largely confirmed at 1.02 billion tons. Among these: proven reserves amount to 405.07 million tons, controlled reserves 298.34 million tons, and predicted reserves 202.17 million tons. The natural gas (dissolved gas) geological reserves stand at 140.1 billion cubic meters (equivalent to 111.63 million tons of oil).
The Jidong Nanpu Oilfield is an integrated, high-quality, and highly efficient oilfield. It features large reserve scale and thick oil layers, with an average single-well oil layer thickness of 80–100 meters. It also boasts high single-well production and high reserve abundance, with tested vertical wells yielding 80–100 tons per day and horizontal wells 200–500 tons per day, and the oilfield’s reserve abundance reaching 5.07 million tons per square kilometer. The oil layers have good physical properties, the oil quality is excellent, and the test production results are favorable, with the main target layers buried at depths of 1,800–2,800 meters.
Jia Chengzao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and an expert in petroleum geology and structural geology, believes that after the discovery of the Nanpu Oilfield, further exploration may lead to new discoveries. In the coming period, it is expected to bring about a rapid increase in crude oil production for PetroChina's Jidong Oilfield Company.
PetroChina stated that during the development and construction of the Nanpu Oilfield, it will fully implement the scientific outlook on development, effectively transform the economic growth model, adopt advanced technologies from both domestic and international sources, emphasize safety and clean production, protect the marine ecological environment, and strive to build the Nanpu Oilfield into a modern, large-scale, technological, green, and harmonious oilfield.
According to a Global Times Online report from China Daily: Chang Xuejun, Vice President of PetroChina Jidong Oilfield Company, said in an exclusive interview with reporters that the discovery of this massive oilfield with over 1 billion tons of reserves in Jidong holds significant practical importance and far-reaching impact for China's oil strategy. From the exploration process to the confirmation of reserves, it has brought new insights to the development of China's oil industry.
