Jiu Feng Mountain is a national AA-level tourist attraction.

The Jiu Feng Mountain Natural Scenic Area has an average elevation of 500 meters, with its main peak, Jiu Feng Mountain, reaching 889 meters. The terrain of the scenic area is majestic and rugged, dotted with peculiar rocks and abundant in biodiversity. The mountain is home to hundreds of kinds of precious medicinal herbs and over two hundred species of wild animals. The climate here is pleasant, and the natural scenery is unique. Together with the Great Wall Hunting Ground (10 km east), Tangquan Royal Tourist Resort (30 km west), the royal mausoleum—Qingdongling (45 km west), and Taohua Valley (35 km south), it forms the “Hundred-Mile Great Wall Golden Tourism Route,” making it an ideal destination for family weekend trips. The area boasts lush vegetation and well-preserved natural ecology, with a forest coverage rate of over 95%. The hospitable locals hold an annual Red Leaf Festival in October, when visitors can enjoy the view of “frost-kissed leaves redder than February flowers.” Scenic spots such as Jiu Feng Mountain, She Shen Platform, Old Cypress Chanting Scriptures, and Warhorse Left Saddle are especially captivating.

Natural Climate: The scenic area features lush vegetation and numerous rare plants. The natural ecology is well preserved, with a forest coverage rate of over 95%, an average annual rainfall of 796 mm—22 mm higher than that of the urban area; the average annual temperature is 10.3°C, and the summer average temperature ranges from 20–26°C, which is 5–7°C lower than in the city.

In the primeval forests, there grow hundreds of varieties of rare trees, flowers, and plants such as pine, cypress, oak, catalpa, holly, azalea, and lily, along with over 120 types of Chinese herbal medicines including skullcap, polygonatum, raw hemp, atractylodes, bupleurum, sophora flavescens, pyrrosia, and ganoderma. The area is also home to more than 60 species of wildlife such as foxes, rabbits, squirrels, snakes, pheasants, long-tailed birds, and partridges. The air here is fresh with a high concentration of negative ions, earning it the title “natural oxygen bar.” Taking a deep breath here will surely refresh you.

Best Time to Visit: The hospitable locals hold an annual Red Leaf Festival in October, when visitors can enjoy the view of “frost-kissed leaves redder than February flowers.” Zunhua’s Jiu Feng Mountain is located at the southern foot of the Yanshan Mountains, 17 km from the city center. It boasts vast forests, diverse rare plant communities and wildlife, a well-preserved ecological environment, and profound cultural heritage. Jiu Feng Mountain is also known as “Three-Terrace Mountain,” comprising the Front Terrace, Middle Terrace, and Back Terrace. The Front Terrace is flat and was historically used by monks for martial arts practice. The Middle Terrace is steep and is the famous “She Shen Platform.” The Back Terrace is perilously steep and rarely visited. The She Shen Platform is a towering peak with a roughly 10-square-meter flat top inscribed with lotus flowers and a chessboard. Legend says a enlightened Buddhist sacrificed himself here, leaping off the cliff to promote Buddhism and transforming into a lotus flower, hence the name. The Middle Terrace houses Qiyun Temple, covering a construction area of 2,100 square meters, with an ancient temple located just above it on the right. The mountaintop features stretches of the Great Wall and several watchtowers, most of which are well preserved. When Qi Jiguang, the Ming Dynasty’s Ji Town Military Commander, inspected the Great Wall defenses here, he composed the “Song of Self-Sacrifice,” which was inscribed on stone and remains to this day. There is also the Saddle Stone where he once left his horse, now revered as “Warhorse Left Saddle” in his memory.

Transportation: The Jiu Feng Mountain Natural Scenic Area lies within the Yanshan Mountain Range, adjacent to the Great Wall, located in Zunhua City, 170 km southeast of Beijing (on the route between Beijing and Beidaihe). It is 17 km from the city center and is an important part of the Great Wall tourism route.
