The Great Wall Hunting Ground is located 40 km northeast of Zunhua, within the Hongshankou area at the southern foot of the ancient Great Wall, covering an area of 59,000 mu.

This area boasts vast mountainous terrain, dense woodlands, a beautiful environment, and a rich selection of enclosed animals. Currently, the park houses 60 animals such as sika deer and elk, as well as over 100 animals including pheasants and hares; there is also a wildlife specimen exhibition hall (currently featuring 15 specimens such as eagles and wolves), rural holiday cottages, a teahouse; the Dragon King Temple has been rebuilt; and there are leisure and entertainment attractions such as a specialty chestnut picking garden. Being in the hunting area, one might say, “A step takes you to a serene realm, a lift of the hand brings game near; roasted game meat is delicious, extending life beyond a hundred years.” Emperor Kangxi once hunted here, and you too can gear up and show off your skills.

In addition to hunting, you can visit the nearby Hongshankou. The Town Dragon Tower here is grand in scale and uniquely designed. Legend has it that in ancient times, an imperial envoy came to inspect and repair the Great Wall. Standing in Hongshankou and looking out at the scenery, he noticed smoke lingering over the ancient city, taking the shape of a giant dragon swirling within, obscuring the view of the city. Intrigued, he hurried back to the capital to report to the emperor, who promptly sent people to verify the phenomenon—and indeed, it was true. Suspecting that the city was destined to produce a true dragon (an emperor), the emperor ordered three towers to be built in Hongshankou to suppress the dragon. This is the legend of the “Town Dragon Tower.”
