Former Residence of Li Dazhao in Leting

The Former Residence of Li Dazhao is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a classic red tourism attraction.

Located in Daheituo Village, Leting County, Hebei Province, the residence was built in 1881, faces south, and covers an area of 1,010.1 square meters. It is a typical brick-and-wood structure of the courtyard-through style found in rural eastern Hebei, surrounded by a brick wall.

The residence is divided into a front yard, middle yard, and back yard. The three wing rooms on the east side of the front yard were the former site of the teaching hall of Li Dazhao’s uncle, Li Renyuan, while the west side was a mill shed. From the middle yard northward to the back yard, it is further divided into eastern and western halves: Li Dazhao lived in the eastern half, while the western half was the residence of his great-uncle, Li Rubi. The middle yard has three east wing rooms, where Li Dazhao was born in the northernmost room—this room displays belongings of his mother. North of the east wing rooms are three main rooms: the westernmost one is a connecting room between the middle and back yards, and the other two are living quarters displaying belongings of Li Dazhao, his wife, and their ancestors. Li Dazhao lived here for many years during his childhood and after marriage. The back yard’s east side has two wing rooms and a shed—the wing rooms were used for grain storage, where Li Dazhao often read, practiced calligraphy, and wrote articles. The west yard houses the Exhibition Room of Li Dazhao’s Revolutionary Activities, displaying photos, manuscripts, books, personal items, and related materials about his life.

In 1988, the Former Residence of Li Dazhao became a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

Li Dazhao was a pioneer of the Chinese communist movement, a great Marxist, an outstanding proletarian revolutionary, and one of the principal founders of the Communist Party of China.

On the sixth day of the tenth month in the fifteenth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (October 29, 1889), Li Dazhao was born in Daheituo Village, Leting County, Hebei Province. As a youth, he aspired to find a way out for suffering China. Proceeding from a patriotic stance, he moved from democracy to communism, and in response to the needs of the era, he was the first to raise high the banner of Marxism-Leninism on Chinese soil, pointing the way toward a new social ideal for China...
