Tangshan Anti-Earthquake Memorial Square is situated at the southwest corner of the intersection of Wenhua Road and Xinhua Avenue in the city center district. It was constructed on the 10th anniversary of the earthquake and occupies an area of 5.44 hectares. The main monument is 33 meters high, formed by four pillars and surrounded by eight reliefs, symbolizing the human spirit overcoming nature and unified support from across the country. The western section is the Anti-Earthquake Memorial Hall. The square has become a gathering place for the public and hosts various large-scale events.

The Anti-Earthquake Monument and Memorial Hall are located on the eastern and western sides of the square, respectively. The entire square embodies the indomitable anti-earthquake spirit of the people of Tangshan and the traditional Chinese virtue that “when one place is in trouble, help comes from all sides.”

At 3:42:53 AM on July 28, 1976, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Tangshan. Buildings collapsed, chimneys snapped, the ground deformed, sand and water erupted, roads cracked, railway tracks bent, derricks tilted, river channels were blocked, and the century-old industrial city was leveled in an instant. The scale of the disaster and the extent of the losses were rarely seen in history. After the quake, with approval from the State Council, seven earthquake ruins were preserved: the Clubhouse of Tangshan Iron and Steel Company, the Office Building of Tangshan Ceramics Factory, the Steel Casting Workshop of Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works, the surface displacement in the yard of Tangshan No. 10 Middle School, the tree-line shift on Jixiang Road, the garage of the Food Company on Tangbai Road, and the library building of Hebei Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (now Hebei University of Technology). Among them, the best-preserved earthquake relic is the former library building of Hebei University of Technology. The Anti-Earthquake Memorial Square is located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Wenhua Road and Xinhua Avenue in the city center. The monument and memorial hall stand on the eastern and western sides of the square, respectively. The entire plaza reflects the resilient spirit of the people of Tangshan in the face of disaster and the traditional Chinese value of mutual aid. Within a hundred meters to the west of the square are several star-rated hotels including Jinjiang VIP Building, Tangshan Hotel, Tangshan Tavern, and Phoenix Holiday Inn, as well as shopping centers like Tangshan Department Store and Hualian Commercial Building, meeting your needs for dining, accommodation, entertainment, fitness, and shopping.
