Jingzhou Martyrs' Cemetery

Jingzhou Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

Located on the east side of Hongmen Road in Shashi District, Jingzhou City, Hubei Province, it is an important base for revolutionary tradition education in Jingzhou. The cemetery covers an area of 182.5 mu and was built in 1959 on the site of the ancient Yuzhang Terrace in Taishiyuan. The main gate of the cemetery features four granite square pillars, with the words “Martyrs’ Cemetery” inscribed in black marble by the former Vice President of China. The cemetery is laid out symmetrically along a central axis centered on the ancient Yuzhang Terrace. The main avenue is about 300 meters long, lined with towering cedar trees. In addition to the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, there is also a memorial tower, which stands 36 meters high, symbolizing the 36th anniversary of Shashi’s liberation when the tower was built. The base of the tower covers an area of more than 2,000 square meters, and the tower itself is pink in color. The tower has nine levels, signifying “soaring straight up to the ninth heaven.” At the top of the tower sits a semi-circular red ball, symbolizing the rising sun, while the four steps on the base represent the four historical periods of the Chinese revolution. Towering pine and cypress trees surround the memorial tower, beneath which the remains of over 300 martyrs rest. The cemetery also houses a martyrs’ ashes exhibition room and a martyrs’ deeds memorial hall, displaying photographs and personal belongings of revolutionary martyrs.
