Chen Chang, courtesy name Zhangfu, was a native of Liuyang, Hunan. He was an early close comrade-in-arms of Comrade Mao Zedong, one of the initiators of the Hunan revolutionary movement, and one of the founders of the Liuyang Party organization. He was born on July 14, 1894, in Wuzhou, Guangxi. At the age of 8, he returned with his parents to his ancestral home—Chen Family Mansion in Tanpo, Tuqiao, Liuyang, Hunan. In 1911, he was admitted to the First Normal School of Hunan and assisted Mao Zedong and others in establishing the New People’s Study Society. He participated in a series of revolutionary activities organized by the society and was a capable assistant to Comrade Mao Zedong. In 1921, he returned to Liuyang and founded the Western Liuyang Cultural Branch at Jinjiang Higher Primary School to spread new ideas and culture among the masses. He joined the Communist Party of China in the winter of 1921. In 1922, he secretly co-founded the Jinchang Special Branch of the CPC with Xia Minghan and Chen Zuowei, serving as the branch secretary. On the eve of the Northern Expedition, Chen Chang persuaded He Long to support the National Government in Guangdong. He was the first CPC member He Long had contact with and exerted significant influence on He Long's decision to join the revolution. During the Northern Expedition, he served as the political director of the 2nd Division of the 35th Army. He participated in the Nanchang Uprising on August 1, 1927. At the end of 1929, he was dispatched by the Party Central Committee as a special commissioner to work with He Long’s forces in western Hunan. He arrived in Lixian County, Hunan, in January of the following year but was arrested. He was executed heroically outside Liuyang Gate in Changsha on February 23, 1930.
