The Shashiyu Memorial Hall covers a total area of 3,647 square meters, has a building area of 894 square meters, and an exhibition area of 1,962 square meters.

Memorial Hall Square

The square is 40 meters long and 80 meters wide, with a white marble statue of Premier [name missing] in the center. The statue was completed on August 1, 2008, to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of the beloved Premier Zhou. The statue stands 4.29 meters tall, and the front and rear staircases span 1.966 meters and 1.967 meters respectively, commemorating Premier Zhou’s two visits to Shashiyu on February 5, 1966, and April 29, 1967.

Shashiyu Memorial Hall

The memorial hall was expanded and renovated from the original Shashiyu Village History Museum. It was organized and implemented by the Zunhua Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision Bureau, designed under the direction of Wang Hongliang, director of the Art Research Institute at the Sculpture Department of Tsinghua University’s Academy of Arts & Design, and constructed by Tangshan Zhongshi Construction Co., Ltd. The planning, design, and construction of the memorial hall adhered to the principles of thrift, respect for history, and education for governance and public inspiration. Based on extensive data collection, meticulous planning, and research, construction began on March 15, 2009, and was completed in early September of the same year with an investment of millions. Viewed from the front, the external structure of the memorial hall forms a “mountain” character, symbolizing the Shashiyu people’s efforts in mountain excavation and valley filling. Viewed from behind, it forms a “soil” character, symbolizing the people’s land reclamation efforts. On the north wall of the thematic prelude hall is a bas-relief featuring figures such as Premier Zhou Enlai and Zhang Guishun, with the inscription “Hard Struggle, Forge Ahead” embedded in the base, highlighting the theme of the memorial hall. To the west of the relief is the preface, explaining the purpose and significance of building the memorial hall. To the east is the musical score and lyrics of “Contemporary Yu Gong Changes the World,” praising the fighting spirit of the Shashiyu people. The east wall displays the new look of Shashiyu, the south wall shows a lengthy reportage by former Xinhua News Agency reporter Dong Sheng titled “See How the Yu Gong Moved the Mountains,” and the west wall features praises of Shashiyu by national leaders including [names missing], [names missing], and Chen Yi. The exhibition rooms are divided into four sections: “Setting the Yu Gong Ambition, Unfolding Grand Plans in the Deep Mountains,” “Ten Thousand Miles, A Thousand Loads for One Mu of Land, Creating High Yields on Stone Slabs,” “Warm Care, Ardent Hopes,” and “Keep Walking the Ten Thousand Miles, Keep Carrying the Thousand Loads.” The content is detailed and authentic, including precious photos of Premier Zhou leading foreign friends on a visit to Shashiyu, honors received by the village over the years, and the village’s struggle and development journey toward economic prosperity. The memorial hall utilizes sound, light, and electricity technologies, combining photos with real-life scenes to authentically recreate labor scenes such as constructing terraces and reclaiming land from mountains, as well as tools like shovels, sledgehammers, steel drills, and carrying poles, vividly showcasing the hard-working spirit and achievements of the Shashiyu people.

Friendship Trees

Our beloved Premier Zhou and Albanian friend Shehu personally planted two friendship trees by the Big Mouth Well. Premier [name missing] and Canadian friends planted two friendship trees by the One Mu Field.

Big Mouth Well

Reflects the effort of the Shashiyu people who, through 17,000 workdays over five winters and six springs, dug a reservoir 25 meters in diameter and 15 meters deep.

Yu Gong Cave

The cave is 246 meters long, 4 meters wide, and 4 meters high. Twenty-seven militia members worked in two shifts, committing 12 hours each day for 10 months, completing the project to facilitate access from south to north.

One Mu Field

One hundred and twenty village youth and over 150 Party members and villagers worked hard for ten nights, building stone embankments and carrying a thousand loads of soil to create one mu of arable land.

International Friendship Forest

Members of the Asian Writers Association from 56 countries and regions visited the village and personally planted 100 acres of cypress trees, which have now grown into a sizable forest.

Youth Forest

The village youth used 2,000 work hours to create 100 acres of forest, the Youth Forest, symbolizing the image of the youth. It is now lush and thriving.
