Huanglong Lake is located on the eastern edge of the vast Jianghan Plain, bordering Caidian District of Wuhan to the south and facing downtown Hanchuan to the northwest, enjoying a prime geographical position. Historically, between the Northern Zhou and the Sui-Tang periods over the span of sixty years, the political, economic, and cultural center of the region was situated by the lake—on Zeng Mountain, where the ancient county seat of Zengshan was established. Historical records state that Zeng Mountain was “close to regional hubs, accessible by carriage and boat, making it a vital land and water junction.”

The name Huanglong Lake comes from a local legend about a yellow dragon in the lake, regarded as an incarnation of justice. Locals say the lake has ninety-nine bends. In reality, the winding Huanglong Lake, at normal water levels, has a shoreline perimeter of approximately 10 kilometers and covers a water area of more than 5,000 acres, with the deepest point reaching 5 meters. The lake is embraced by lush green hills, creating a naturally beautiful landscape that resembles a traditional Chinese ink painting, exuding the graceful charm of misty, layered scenery.

Huanglong Lake is home to distinctive lake delicacies and also serves as the source of ingredients for two well-known dishes. The first is called “Hammer Steamed Eel,” a specialty with some fame within Hubei Province. Also known as “Xiao Family Hammer Steamed Eel,” this dish originates from Hammer Street by Huanglong Lake, which has long been a bustling trade hub. The most renowned local chefs on Hammer Street all come from the Xiao family, who have passed down their culinary skills through several generations.
