Kailuan Coal Mine Museum

The Kailuan Coal Mine Museum serves as a patriotic education base.

Covering a site area of 1,500 square meters with a construction area of over 7,400 square meters across six floors and standing 21 meters tall, the Kailuan Museum was designed in the image of the Kailuan Mining Bureau Building constructed in 1919—stately, sacred, and imposing in scale. In the museum square stands the main monument "Century Dream Pursuit," created by the renowned artist Hou Yimin.

Strolling along the museum’s 600-meter-long exhibition route, each hall tells the profound history and culture of Kailuan—how the Self-Strengthening Movement and the rise and development of China’s modern coal industry endured arduous journeys, how a single coal mine like Kailuan supported the growth of both Tangshan and Qinhuangdao cities, how “their extraordinary fighting spirit” embodies the Kailuan ethos, what contributions Kailuan workers made during various historical periods such as early Party building, the Five Mines Strike, resistance against Japanese and puppet regime oppression, support for national construction, and earthquake relief efforts, and how the Kailuan Group has forged ahead since the reform and opening-up era to maintain its century-old legacy...

Most remarkably, unlike most static museums, the Kailuan Museum is very much alive.

Adjacent to the museum lies China’s first mechanized coal mine—the Tangshan Mine—which still maintains an annual output of 4 million tons and remains a key pit of the Kailuan Coal Mine. Visitors to the museum can also take a simulated cage lift from the fourth floor down to the underground to embark on an “Underground Exploration Tour.” Within the crisscrossing network of ancient mine tunnels spanning 5,000 square meters, they can explore eight major attractions including the Gallery of Time, Re-enactment of Mining, Geological World, and Time Tunnel, experiencing firsthand the historical evolution from primitive to modern coal mining.
