Fengzi Mountain

About 50 kilometers north of downtown Jingmen in Baiyang Village, Xianju Township (now north of Xujie Street in Xianju Township), there is a famous mountain called Fengzi Mountain. The northwestern side of the mountain is just 6 kilometers from Xianju Town. This mountain stretches from north to south, has an elevation of 265 meters, and covers an area of 2 square kilometers. In ancient times, there was once a temple built on this mountain. When the temple was completed, a pair of phoenixes flew down and landed there, so the temple was named Phoenix View Temple, and the mountain was originally called Phoenix View Mountain, named after the temple. Later, the leader of a rebel army occupied the peak of the mountain, built a stronghold, and declared himself king. The stronghold raised swarms of hornets. When government troops came to suppress them, they were attacked by angry hornets that flew out of the thrown beehives, leaving them bruised and battered as they fled in panic. From then on, the original Phoenix View Mountain came to be known as Fengzi Mountain.

Fengzi Mountain is the watershed of the extension of the Jingshan Mountain Range. The northwest slope of Fengzi Mountain faces the undulating, continuous high mountains, while the southeast slope overlooks the boundless rolling hills. At the break of dawn, when the first light of morning announces the arrival of day, climbing to the summit of Fengzi Mountain and looking around, the scenery of the Jingmen mountain area is truly magnificent. To the east, the sails on the Xiang River are tinged golden by the rising sun; to the south, the Dongshan Pagoda of the ancient city of Jingmen can be faintly seen.

The water-resistant rocks found at Fengzi Mountain are lightweight and not easily broken, making them perfect for building rockeries, decorating potted plants, and beautifying gardens — truly marvelous. Every year, several thousand tons of stone quarried from Fengzi Mountain are transported to supply cities such as Jingmen, Shashi, and Yichang. The mountain also holds abundant mineral resources including coal, sulfur, and iron.

Xianju Township: Xianju Township in Dongbao District, Jingmen City, is beautiful and mysterious. In ancient times, it was said to be a place where immortals lived, due to its lush green mountains, clear waters, and stunning scenery, believed to be the dwelling place of deities — hence the name “Xianju” (Immortal Abode). Located at the northernmost tip of Jingmen City, Xianju borders counties (and cities) such as Zhongxiang, Yicheng, and Nanzhang, and is known as the “Gateway to Northern Jingmen.” The township currently administers 27 villages and 1 neighborhood committee, with a total population of 28,000 and a land area of 238 square kilometers, including 11,867 hectares of forested land.
