At the northern outskirts of Jingmen City lies Lingjiu Mountain, beneath which stands Immortal Maiden Mountain, and on top of that mountain grows the Immortal Maiden Tree. Legend says that long ago, at the base of Lingjiu Mountain, there was a rich family with just one daughter, cherished as the apple of their eyes. At the age of sixteen, this remarkable girl frequently helped the local people. One day, while her parents were away in town, a sudden thunderstorm loomed, threatening heavy rain. Seeing that the grain in the threshing ground was about to get soaked, she grabbed a broom and swept around the area to protect it. But then she thought of several neighboring households whose grain was also spread out to dry, with all the family members working in the fields. She quickly rushed to help them save their crops. Just then, her parents returned drenched from the rain and asked, “What about our grain?” When they heard that their own grain was still lying in the open, they flew into a rage and scolded her, “You good-for-nothing girl!” But when they got home and saw that circles had been drawn around their grain—within which not a single grain had gotten wet—they were puzzled and realized they had wronged their daughter. However, by then, the girl had already jumped into the spring pool at Shangquan Temple. To honor her memory, people began calling her the Immortal Maiden. Later, a tree grew from her grave, and it became known as the Immortal Maiden Tree.
