Baoji Village

Baoji Village is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Henan Province.

Baoji Village is located within Xiliuhe Park in Zhongyuan District, Zhengzhou City, on the north side of Zhongyuan West Road, adjacent to the Jialu River to the west. It was first built in the 9th year of the Xianfeng reign during the Qing Dynasty (1859). The village sits on a high terrace on the east bank of the Jialu River, with a gate remaining at its southern end. A stone plaque above the gate bears the three large characters “Baoji Village,” and the area is surrounded by village walls, with deep ditches outside the walls.

The overall shape of Baoji Village follows the contour of the terrace, forming an irregular layout. It stretches 220 meters from north to south, 150 meters from east to west, with a perimeter of approximately 650 meters and an area of 28,000 square meters. Since its construction in 1859, it has survived through historical periods such as the Central Plains War between Chiang Kai-shek, Feng Yuxiang, and Yan Xishan, as well as the Anti-Japanese War. Its preservation to this day is truly remarkable.

Baoji Village is currently the only village in Zhengzhou that largely retains the traditional appearance of a Central Plains earthen fortress. Its village walls, gates, and original street layout are well-preserved, authentically reflecting Central Plains culture and showcasing the traditional charm of old Zhengzhou from a century ago. It is a unique living museum of earthen fortress culture in the Central Plains region, and the only place in Zhengzhou where visitors can experience a genuine and intact earthen fortress. It represents the earthen fortresses of the Central Plains south of the Yellow River and stands as a tangible witness to over 100 years of rich history.
