The beloved street snack is back with a twist! Located in Taoyuan’s Zhongyuan Night Market, one vendor has come up with a creative idea — adding dried flowers to sponge cake batter, then drizzling freshly baked cakes with condensed milk. Dubbed the “Instagram-worthy sponge cake,” the “Condensed Milk & Rose” version is also Taiwan’s very first, instantly sparking a craze on IG.

Hidden away in Zhongyuan Night Market, “Huagu Haori” just opened in July. Their sponge cakes are made to order and feature a crispy outside with a soft, dense inside. The most unique is the “Condensed Milk & Rose Sponge Cake,” which includes edible rose petals in the batter and is topped with condensed milk once cooled. A delicate rose aroma emerges with each bite, captivating those dreaming in pastel tones.

After graduating from university, the owner started her own business. Speaking of the inspiration, she said she noticed dried flowers were all the rage recently, which sparked the idea to combine them with sponge cakes. With a background in design and an interest in baking, she took charge of both the cart design and cake development herself.

Aside from the Rose & Condensed Milk flavor, Huagu Haori offers four other options: original, cocoa crisp, and caramel salted. Each serving comes with four pieces priced between NT$40–50. They also occasionally release limited-edition flavors, such as the “Little Black Girl” with organic bamboo charcoal powder and cheese cubes, or cocoa crisp versions with added Oreo cookies. Even the packaging boxes are repurposed egg cartons — super creative.
