Du Zhai Site

The Du Zhai Site is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Zhengzhou City.

The Du Zhai Site is situated in the hilly region of the northwestern suburbs of Zhengzhou, within the northeastern extension of the Songshan Mountain range. In the center of the site lies a north-south field path alongside an ancient drainage ditch oriented from southwest to northeast (now leveled into farmland), with the terrain being relatively low-lying. Cultural remains are found on the terraces on either side. This site was discovered during the second national cultural relics survey in the 1980s. In March 2005, to accommodate the construction of the Zhengzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, the Zhengzhou Municipal Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology conducted a new investigation of the site. During land leveling in the 1970s, gray soil, pottery shards, and other artifacts were unearthed. Current surveys have revealed that the site has a cultural layer approximately 1.5 meters thick, consisting of grayish-brown soil mixed with red-fired soil particles. The soil is relatively loose and contains artifacts such as pottery fragments. The pottery is predominantly made of fine clay, with lesser amounts of sand-tempered and clamshell-tempered pottery. The colors are mainly reddish-coated with gray bodies, followed by gray pottery, along with a small amount of painted pottery. Decorative patterns include cord marks, basket weaves, grid patterns, and plain surfaces. Identifiable vessel shapes include pottery jars, basins, tripods, bowls, and jars.
